Is E304 Halal?

E304 (ascorbyl palmitate) is vitamin C joined to a fatty acid (palmitic acid). The fatty acid can come from plant oil or animal fat — possibly pork — and the label usually does not say which.

Hanafi, Shafi, Maliki, Jafari, Zaydi, Hanbali, Ibadi — their opinion: the fat could be pork, so they treat it as doubtful until a plant or halal source is named.
